On one of his visits to Hastings, Sierra Leone, Derek Tomblin identified some 13 bridges that needed totally rebuilding, restoring or upgrading. LOAF appealed to the Hastings & St Leonards community – schools, churches, businesses etc – to sponsor a bridge, and a generous community responded.
The consortium of Hastings churches raised £30k and re-built all the town’s bridges, which had deteriorated or been destroyed in the civil war.
This means that goods can move into and out of the town, and Hastings people can more easily get out to Freetown and the surrounding area, to work.
